bbc shortwave, 26 sep 2015

During 1025-1050 UTC on 26 Sep 2015, I tuned to 9740 kHz on my Eton E5 with a ceiling-mounted random wire antenna connected. I heard a faint and fading English broadcast which sounded quite like BBC due to the accents. Short-wave.info lists three BBC broadcasts for this time and frequency, originating in Thailand and Singapore.

Within a few minutes, I positively identified the broadcast from the phrases "BBC World Service" and "BBC News". BBC's current frequency guide for Southeast Asia matches the data on short-wave.info, confirming broadcasts originating in both Thailand and Singapore on 9740 kHz. I'm assuming that I'm receiving the stronger of the two signals (which is from Thailand). In this case, Nahkon Sawan, Thailand to San Francisco, California represents a reception distance of approximately 7900 mi / 12700 km.

winter 2013-2014 mediumwave dx

Introduction

During September 2013, I built an iPad app to help me with my occasional mediumwave DX hobby. I used it as I developed it, and accomplished more than ever before as a result. Contributing to the success of this logging project was the use of five listening locations throughout the San Francisco bay area. This gave me access to lower local interference levels, and topography that blocked oppressive AM HD transmissions from KCBS and other broadcasters.

Notable achievements for these logs:
• Highest total number of logs (144) for a given logging period
• First time logging every region 2 mediumwave frequency
• First time logging Oklahoma
• First time logging Chihuahua, Mexico

Unfinished business:
• It would've been nice to achieve 150 logs
• Didn't log Montana, which was the next nearest unlogged state
• Could've done much more with graveyard frequencies

14 October 2013

on the road

As I mentioned on twitter (@cobaltpet) recently, I started a new set of mediumwave logs for northern hemisphere winter 2013-2014. I logged quite a lot at home already, but I've also been taking short nighttime road trips to identify additional stations. This gets my radio away from indoor and outdoor interference sources, and in a few cases, allows me to use topography to avoid the jamming static from AM HD broadcasts.

During one of the first road trips, I chose to park in a highway turnout along the Pacific Ocean. I had a few problems there:

• Overhead electrical wires
• Ocean noise
• Humidity
• Too close to the highway
• The area had a No Parking sign, and passing police stopped when they saw my parked vehicle

Two different policemen stopped to talk to me on two different nights in this spot. The first policeman was very friendly. He was older, wanted to make sure I didn't need assistance, and reminded me not to trespass by climbing down the unsafe hill. The second policeman was very different. He was younger, and made it clear that I must obey the No Parking sign. Since I didn't want to take chances with encountering an unfriendly policeman, and equally concerned with simply wasting their time, I decided to look elsewhere on Google Maps.

I looked for parking areas where other cars and other people might be around the middle of the night. As it turns out, the new spot I chose has a few bars nearby, so those are somewhat busy at night. Police cars periodically circle through the parking area, but everyone is there legally so there's typically no interaction.

The new area (which I will keep private) works great. It doesn't solve all of the problems with my previous location, but I'm not bothering anyone, and I'm able to get a much lower noise level on my radio than at home. I didn't get a lot of logging done during this first trip to my new outdoor dxing spot, but I logged a Mexican station on my last unlogged frequency with XEEBC on 730 kHz.

My winter 2013-2014 mediumwave logs will be published here sometime in 2014.

19 September 2013

mediumwave logs, sep 2011 - mar 2012

Around autumn 2011, I began another batch of mediumwave DX logs with my Eton E5. I was also hanging out on an irc channel for mediumwave DXers, and I got helpful reception and identification tips from others. Apparently I sat on these logs for quite a long time, so I thought I would finally publish it.

Challenges: AM HD/IBOC, ESPN Radio, Fox. IBOC causes overwhelming static on both adjacent channels, really putting a damper on DXing those frequencies. ESPN Radio and Fox don't like to give out their callsigns. To them, the brand is important and the callsign is not. When sports stations are broadcasting games, they have short breaks during the game for station identification, but these happen at irregular times (not always at :00 or :30).

One of my absolute favorite discoveries during this project was the brilliant hour-long "Quirks and Quarks" show on CBC Radio One. The episode I heard contained several interesting segments on various scientific topics. It was so refreshing after hearing hours upon hours of political, conspiracy, sports, and infomercial broadcasts from the all-too-typical United States stations.

Quotes, excerpts, and oddities:

• "You look pretty!" "Thank you! You look pretty too!" (Two female announcers on 1170 KLOK)
• Invitation to a "peaceful, weekly meeting" at an abortion clinic in Mountain View, CA.
• "If it looks good, worship it!"
• "I became sexually impotent."
• "You know what I'm gonna play right now? You're young enough to know this one."
• "Panzy pundits and politicians!"
• "I have worms on all kinds of flowers."
• "Satan's business is in the realm of the spiritual!"
• KAZA 1290 briefly aired the sound of a phone off the hook.
• "The discarded cello was indeed old."
• "Uhhhh Ohhhhhh Ahhhhhhh Ooooooo Eeeeeeeee!" (Chanting on an Asian language station)
• "What are all those pockets on your jacket, Jay?" "Emergency snack compartments."
• "We are honored to be on this flamethrower of a station!"
• "Everybody kisses his ass. He has the cleanest ass in baseball, this Tony La Russa."
• "There's nothing wrong with the south, but they screwed up Italian food."

northern finland dxpedition camp for rent

A group of serious DXers have assembled an impressive camp in northern Finland, and set up 12 beverage antennas. They're offering to rent out the camp and help anyone who wants to use it. The page states "We want you to succeed and we'll do everything to make your DXpedition as comfortable and successful as possible."

This remote arctic circle location with very little radio frequency interference promises to put you in touch with nature and provide an ideal environment for AM DX.

Aihkiniemi DX cabin in Lapland for rent

The webpage shows a photo of the cabin exterior, a few interior photos, a Scandinavian map showing the location of Aihkiniemi, a list of the 12 antennas with the direction and target areas for each, a globe with the antennas drawn over them to illustrate the target regions. "The antennas hang 3-5 meters above the ground to prevent reindeer and moose from getting stuck in the wires." However, nature still interferes: "Bears, moose, reindeer and rabbits have all wreaked havoc with our antennas at some point (mostly cutting or damaging the coax cables on the ground)."

Due to the effort required in getting there, and the chances of DX being affected by a solar storm, they recommend staying at the camp for at least a week. Since the northern location is only practical for long-range reception during the northern hemisphere's winter, snow will be a factor. "In between major snowfalls, there's a shovel under the cabin for your exercise."

I grew up in upstate New York, where I've already had enough winter to last a lifetime. But an expedition to this well-equipped camp could be quite productive and fun for those prepared to make the effort.

mediumwave logs, mammoth lakes, september 2012

To celebrate the 2012 northern hemisphere autumn equinox, here are some mediumwave dx logs. I only had a few hours to spend on this project, so many of the logs are low-hanging fruit. But it certainly whet my appetite for winter dx.

In mid-September, I stayed in a condominium for three nights in Mammoth Lakes, California. Relatives traveled with me and stayed at a hotel nearby. They are from the east coast and wake up early, so I had time to myself in the evenings. The condo I stayed in had an iHome iH6 radio, and while it isn't an ideal mediumwave dx receiver, I put it to work.

This location is on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, just east of Yosemite National Park. There was no daytime reception anywhere in 520-1710 kHz.

The iHome radio had a digital frequency display, and was tuned in 10 kHz steps with a scroll wheel. Selectivity seemed poor, or some stations were simply polluting adjacent frequencies. Occasionally the radio made loud buzzing sounds, which I was unable to identify. A battery-powered radio would've certainly been preferable. Also, the AM antenna was external, with poor nulling capability.

Confirmed stations are listed with location and distance. CKWX was only confirmed by branding ("news 1130") and slogan ("traffic and weather together every 10 minutes on the ones"), not by callsign.

I'm also including my raw logs, which I typed into a smart phone. I came up with a simple keyword system to describe what I heard on each frequency. Some of the keywords are multiple words written together. In the notes, callsigns followed by question marks are guesses, and were not confirmed. Phrases in quotes are quoted from the broadcast. 920 and 1130 were my favorite frequencies to work. It would've been fun to sort through the other pileups in the band if I had more time.

calculating distances between cities

When I'm doing mediumwave dxing (that is, identifying and logging distant AM broadcast band stations), I like to know the distance between the transmitter site any my listening location. This isn't as exact as it could be, because most of the time I only log the city of the station license holder. This is not always the same as the location of the transmitter site. For example, KCBS AM 740 is licensed in San Francisco, CA, but their four transmitter towers are near the city of Novato; almost 30 miles north of San Francisco.

In the case of logging 10-watt Travelers' Information Stations (TIS), I like to get an exact distance. So here are some methods for determining the shortest distance between two cities or map locations:

• Geobytes city distance tool - Also shows compass heading
• Great circle mapper - Focuses on the distance between two airports
• Google Maps distance calculator - Lets you zoom in to plot or move the pins
• MWList - worldwide longwave, mediumwave, and TBL database; shows logged receptions on a world map

bay area dxing opportunity on 740 khz tonight

San Francisco's KCBS has announced that they will not be broadcasting on AM 740 KHz from 12:10am to 3am on Thursday, October 28. This is a scheduled outage for transmitter work. KCBS will continue broadcasting on FM 106.9 MHz during this time.

If I had the opportunity to stay up late tonight, I would love to see what I can pull in on 740 kHz, and on the two adjacent channels that are often jammed by that ridiculous HD radio stuff.

If you're in the area and can take advantage of this, please share your findings!

mediumwave logs, autumn 2006

My first attempt at mediumwave DX was in April 2006, when I logged 89 stations with my Tecsun BCL-2000. I just completed another round, during November and the first half of December 2006. Using three of my radios and more favorable conditions, I logged 126 stations.

My previous list of logged mediumwave stations provided a starter guide. Once I picked up a signal, I stayed with it until I verified the callsign or station slogan, or I found an online audio stream to compare against. After logging a good number of stations, I wrote a station wishlist on an index card to guide me to the more important/likely frequencies. That list included nearby stations and some further-away stations that I expected to get. That helped me identify at least 15 more stations.

Some of the stations that I logged for the first time are located in:
Boise, Idaho
Mesa, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona
Portland, Oregon
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
Reno, Nevada
Seattle, Washington
Spokane, Washington
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Alas, nothing from Alaska, Hawaii, or Texas. First-time logs are listed with (New).

1480: something near Missouri. Before local sunrise on December 16, I heard a commercial for "Max Motors", a car dealer located in Missouri, on 1480 khz. The web address provided in this commercial was max71.com.

I also did not attempt to identify several distant broadcasts that were in Spanish.

mediumwave logs, april 2006

I recently purchased a red Tecsun BCL-2000, which is the Chinese version of the Grundig S350. Although it receives part of the shortwave spectrum, it earns its keep for its strength in AM and FM reception.

Here's my list of received mediumwave stations with the BCL-2000. Frequencies above 1640 khz were received with my SW7600GR because the BCL-2000 doesn't reach that high. I used the radios themselves without additional antennas.

First I identified stations by contents and best-guesses with some FCC lookups. Then I confirmed the stations on subsequent receptions by listening for IDs and call letters.

There's more I could do, but identifications were becoming harder and harder. And I want to put this project to rest for now!

I verified 89 stations during April 2006:

560 khz: KSFO 560 Talk Radio (San Francisco, California; 5 kW)
