grundig g1 is a darker, rebranded eton e1

I visited the Eton website today, and saw a product I haven't seen before: Grundig G1. It appears to be the same radio as the Eton E1 but with a darker enclosure. This is similar to the gray Eton E5 being followed many months later by a Grundig G5 in a darker enclosure. The Grundig G1 is listed as coming soon.

I like the darker enclosures of these Grundig-branded radios, and the Grundig logo looks cooler too.

Interesting, there is no mention of XM capabilities ( not a bad thing) Also note the picture is blurry, wonder if they will name it the Satellite? I also like the black color, Purchased a G5 from Radio Shack and it works very well, compares to my Sony 7600gr with much better usability at night ( controls and lighting)

Greetings Bill:
I think the name 'Satellit' is probably gone for good because newcomers could get it confused with satellite radio. I'm glad you like the G5!

Do you get to Lake Tahoe much?

JB: I've previously seen E1XM and E1 models sold for the same price. Surely the E1 and G1 without XM components are more profitable...

Too bad they didn't take this opportunity to integrate an internal ferrite antenna!

Namaste Weatherall!

No, my wife and I don't go to Tahoe much ( we tend to lose money at the casinos!), However we enjoy riding around the lake on our motorcycle and did alot of backpacking in our younger days! I do have a question for you , what type of antenna are you using on your E5? On my G5, I've been using the long wire with good results. My Sony I use the ANLP-1 with great results too. In closing thanks for a great Webpage, very well done, I check it daily!

Bill:
Sorry I didn't write a reply sooner. I have a Degen DE31 active loop antenna clipped to the whip of my Eton E5. On many nights, I leave the antenna unpowered and just use the DE31 as a wire extension of the whip. I have found that this provides more signal strength in many cases than plugging the antenna into the radio and powering it. But I am still trying to find a good way to ground the radio. In one case I was using another random wire antenna to do so, but that stopped working for some reason. My knowledge of shortwave antennas is limited. If you have any antenna advice and/or questions, please let me know and I could share it with the readers.

JB: I noticed that Universal lists the E1 with a list price of $700 and the G1 with a list price of $500. What does it all mean? I'll be keeping an eye on this...
